At 63, after 36 years of teaching, I am joyfully "retired." It's really a time of still "going-hard-at-it" but in different ways. I've loved continuing the many adventures that now can be taken anytime during the year. On an October day: backpacking 7,000 feet down to the bottom of the Grand Canyon to the Phantom Ranch area; then 3 days later, backpacking to the Havaisupai Indian Reservation, only a 3, 500 ft. drop into the canyon and swimming at the Havaisupai Falls...a true oasis in the middle of desert. Or in May, in the midst of spectacular desert blooms, spending 6 grand days of mountain biking on the wild trails of Moab, Utah. Then there was the 4 weeks in April/May of visiting friends in Thailand, China, Hawaii. (There has also been trips to Hawaii in November....Hawaii at Christmas...Hawaii in July!! (It's great having a friend who lives in Hawaii!)
Other JOYS of not working "9 to 5" include having time: to mountain bike during mid-day; to take Strider (one of our Belgian Tervurens who is a Delta Society pet therapy dog) to visit patients in the local hospitals, schools, and other facilities; taking care of children of friends; leading kids, youth, adults on mountain biking, hiking adventures; do more gardening and woods beautification around our home (which includes chainsawing trees, splitting wood...); being available to help and do needed things for friends, and sometimes getting dinner ready on time for Brian (spouse) who works at God's World Publications.
I'd still like to travel more: Alaska---which is the only one of our 50 states that I have not traveled in; return to Europe (have been in 11 European countries already) to visit Dutch friends and explore other places; go to Zion Natl. park and hike through the gorge; go to Australia and New Zealand... Sigh...one can still dream!!
Thinking of "Time-to-do things"...I thought I'd have more time for reading, devotions, reflection, photography, doing the water sports that I've so loved, rock climbing, spending more time with friends, involvement in the local church, sewing, crafts, etc., painting and rewallpapering the house, more full-moon hiking, boating, biking around Cades Cove adventures...but I still don't somehow carve out those times as much as I'd like!! (Great surprise to me!!)
