This gear list is targeted for the R2R Athletes, however most of the gear dovetails with the Chase Athletes...
CLOTHING::
> Performance undergarments... NO Cotton. (Tighty Whitey's)
> Socks should be quality, performance light hiking or trail runing socks.
> Trail hat
> Sunglasses
> Technical performance outerwear. Moisture wicking materials. Long sleeve shirts with great venting and an SPF rating are ideal for the 10+ hours you will be hiking is preferred.
SHOES:
> Light hikers or good trail runners... You get what you pay for here. Break them in several weeks before the canyon date.
HYDRATION & FUEL:
> You must carry at least 3 litres of water, which is approx. a 100 oz. Camelback bladder.
> Electrolytes in chewable, pill, or powder mix form.
> Performance food as we have discussed. (Jells, Bars, etc.)
SURVIVAL KIT:
(Mandatory Items)
> Ibuprofen
> Spare bite valve for bladder
> Copies or originals of ID, Medical Card, Emergency info, Credit Card. (Keep these things in a zip lock baggie in your survival kit.)
> Emergency Blanket
> Shoe Lace
> H2O treatment tablets (iodine)
> Blister Kit
> Several bandages in a variety of sizes
> Alcohol cleaning pads
> Matches
> Antiseptic ointment
(Suggested Items)
> Body Glide
> Snap Light
> Chapstick
> Small Hemostat's (great to remove cactus)
> Athletic /Medical Tape
MISC:
None! Weight is the enemy! Be well planned and well prepared!
RECOVERY BAG: (This bag will be at the South Rim when you come out, it should consist of comfort and recovery items)
> Dry clothes
> Sandals
> Recovery shakes, food
> Blanket
> Pain killers!
