Last week we looked at the spiritual practice of devotional reading. (Lectio Divina) The five movements of devotional reading: 1. Silence- quiet preparation-ask God to open you to hear from scripture 2. Listen- read the passage aloud slowly-when a phrase or passage stands out our strikes you—stop and attend to what God is saying—simply listen and wait 3. Meditate read the scripture a second time out loud-reflect on the importance of the phrases and words that stand out to you..Listen for any invitation that God is extending to you 4. Conversing with God Respond in prayer-read the scripture a third time and then enter into a personal conversation with God…response truthfully and authentically. What feelings has the text aroused in you? What do you desire to talk about with God? Etc. 5. Contemplation rest and wait….allow some time for scripture to sink into your soul—yield and surrender to God’s leading Again this is an ancient practice of Christianity-this practice is rooted in Christian history and for some reason ceased over the course of many generations….this is an exceptional practice to begin on the Christian journey…. I want to encourage you all to practice this on this passage this week….I will post this on livekite.com as well so that you can share what you are hearing and learning from the passage. REMEMBER ALL OF THESE PRACTICES SHOULD BE IN THE CONTEXT OF A CHRISTIAN COMMUNITY—THIS COMMUNITY KEEPS US GROUNDED. Here is the passage: I Kings 19:1-9 Read this by doing the five steps listed above…..

Incorporate the Jesus prayer in your everyday lives... Start with 10-15 mintues to be still and focus on God..... Recite the Jesus Prayer God have Mercy Christ have mercy on me a sinner God have Mercy Say this prayer over and over--Breathing in and out when you see each line As you repeat this try to combat your mind from wandering and realize your place in God's mercy May this prayer remind us that we need the mercy God offers to us as sinners through Christ. The discipline of giving... Are you willing to liv eon less so others can have more? Are you willing to downsize? How much do you need to live on? Godly generousity overflows from a grace filled heart. Giving and giving sacrificially is an indication of a faith that is alive and active. How generous are you with your possessions? Do you realize that all that you have belongs to God. How does realizing that all that you have belongs to God effect your view on giving? Giving is a spiritual discipline that we need to practice.
