Nearly 40 years ago, Susan Atkins was a leading character in one of the most horrific chapters in California history. On Tuesday, the former follower of Charles Manson sought to end her story on her own terms: by being allowed to go home. The state parole board denied that request. Atkins, convicted in the slayings of actress Sharon Tate and others in 1969, is dying of brain cancer and asked that she be granted compassionate release from prison. She wants to spend her final months surrounded by family and friends, not prison guards. I'm posing the question. What would your recommendation be if you were a member of the parole board. You can search for the news story on the net and get more details. How would you respond and why? |

Thanks for the easy question. Ha Ha. I am probably going to go back and forth on this one. I know that God is just. I know that he forgives. I wished that I could tell you that I would be able to forgive someone like her if it were my family. After her serving 40 years, losing a leg, paralyzed in her other leg, and now brain cancer, I believe that if I could see her, talk to her, and hear her heart, it would be a little bit easier for me. If she is truly repentant and wanting to go home and die, I guess I'm for that. I don't believe she has "paid her debt to society" because of the sentence she recieved, but I don't see her as being a threat to society in her condition. So, I guess I would let her go home to her family and die. This is a tough question man. My flesh says no, my spirit says yes. |
